back to school

School for our oldest son, Conner, has always been a bit of a struggle.  We have tried several different approaches, some very successful, some not so much.  This year we are trying something new: online school through the K12 program.

The main thing that drew us to K12 is the fact that it is not just me teaching him.  Conner is enrolled in an actual public school, the Oklahoma Virtual Charter Academy.  There are principals, teachers, and classes.  He has a daily schedule.  The curriculum is already put together.  We don’t have to come up with anything, we just coach him.  Woo Hoo!

It’s a little early to know exactly how everything is going to go, but I feel pretty good about it so far.

To be able to coach Conner, I have decided to work part time from home.  I am so thankful that I have a job where that is even a possibility!

Because both Conner and I would be at home, we knew we had to get a good work space that was comfortable for two.  Our office has always been a catch-all, the landing place for all of our stuff that didn’t have another home.  It’s actually pretty embarrassing to show these pictures, but here you go:

A friend of ours recently remodeled his business office and was awesome enough to give us a slightly used IKEA desk, so we used that as our starting point.  We wanted to try to use the one desk for two work stations so I went to Pinterest for some inspiration.

This is what it looks like today:

We still have a lot on our to-do list for this room (painting, accessories, light fixture/fan, organizing the bookshelves, etc.) but it is nice to have the main set up in place.  Conner and I have worked a couple of days together and so far it is very comfortable.  We both have plenty of work space and we are close enough that I can help keep him on task.

I am excited about this new adventure with him!
